Audition can import and save .bwf (broadcast wave files) which is PT's native file type. Audition 2.0 would probably communicate with PT pretty good. I think Audition uses a lot of the Pro Tools functions such as automation lanes, etc. PT is just way more user friendly IMHO.

PT uses SDII (SOund Designer II) files as it's default if I remember correctly - although similar to Broadcast Wave they are not compatible formats. SDII files can be read by Digital Performer and Wavelab to the best of my knowledge.
PT is a horrible out of the ark user interface IMHO - anything else is better - Logic, Cubase, Sonar, Samplitude etc. can do much more than PTLE or M-Powered. The biggest advantage PTLE and M-Powered have is the ability to take the files straight into a PT HD TDM system as used by 99% of pro recording studios.

PT still supports SDII files but also .BWF, AIFF, and OMF files. What is meant by "out of the ark" user interface? Personally, I think PT is one of the easiest interfaces to learn and is second to none as an editor. The Mix window is extremely flexible for ITB mixing. For electronic music and MIDI integration though, I realize it's still a bit weak, but getting better with each release.
I have Adobe Audition 2.0 and have used it since the Cool Edit days. I think it's a wicked piece of software with multiple file-type support and some excellent analysis and denoising tools, as well as support for both DX and VST plugs. My only beef is it doesn't seem to recognize the Digi 001 soundcard as being 24-bit capable, which of course it is.
