Hey all. I've had a lot of questions about the right hardware/software to use for recording your guitar, bass and vocal tracks. I use the Toneport UX2 from Line 6 and found it to be very exceptional. It comes with a lite version of Ableton and also comes with Gearbox, a virtual amp and effects rack. Nevertheless, I would be interested in hearing of other stuff people are having success with.

Guitar Sounds

For guitars I often use my Marshall amp miked from a distance of 3-6 inches with an SM57 (NOT the Beta 57), on axis but pointed about halfway between the center of the cone and the edge of the speaker. Then I combine this with tones from the excellent IK Multimedia Amplitube program. I've also had success using Native Instruments Guitar Rig and Nomad Factory Guitar Rock Amp Legends but I generally prefer the sounds I get from Amplitube.
