Hey all:
We were recording in our jam space and have mics set up on all of Glen's drums. I used a Shure 57 for ther snare and placed it on the top at about 30 degrees offset, 2-3 cm from the skin on the side. The result is that it sounds "poppy", sort of like hitting a spoon against an empty ice cream bucket. I hear some people use two mics' on the snare (one on top and one on bottom). Is that the reason we are mssing the snare rattles in the recording? I can post the mix if someone wants to try and fix it.
Also - is there any VST plugin that can add in the snare rattle after the fact to make it sound good?

Hey Duane. Yes, miking the bottom of the snare is done to get the rattle from the snares. Honestly though, get a program called Drumagog or Sound Replacer, preferably Drumagog because it's easier to use on ghost notes and stuff, and it will become your best friend in recording. These programs use your original recorded drum sound to trigger samples. Just mix in the original sound with 1 or 2 samples and you're laughing. Drumagog will be the most useful plug-in you will EVER own, bar none.
